Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To get the largest rental within budget, we highly recommend booking in Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at Crystal Coast restaurants, tours, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Crystal Coast vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • The earlier your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation home 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites usually offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
  • Look for your local Crystal Coast visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain money saving offers on local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

How to choose the perfect rental home:

  • Select a group lead, select your dates, and choose a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and the bed configuration you need. Conch Inn, Oceanfront Duplex in Emerald Isle, NC! has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available online. If they are not listed, reach out to the property owner before booking the property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish what is right for your vacation family.
  • Looking for unique amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Note that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home.
  • Note any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of issues.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You will enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great source for finding the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are away! Don't let crooks spoil your family vacation.
  • When it's time to leave, complete a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the manager is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to propel more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
