Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation rental experience:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. To get the best value, try shifting your vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Crystal Coast vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
  • The earlier you can book a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your vacation property up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your group qualifies for a discount.
  • Booking websites typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Selecting and booking yourrental:

  • First, have your family select trip dates and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your group needs. Boardwalk Shores (B) Very close to the beach! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Crystal Coast vacation rental search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available online. If not, contact the property management company before booking the vacation home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what is suitable for your trip.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or costs could be applied to your agreement.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. Put the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • During arrival, record any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Lock your vacation home while you are out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
  • Re-check every room of the property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a terrific time? Many rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
