SoundSide Restaurant

Locally-owned SoundSide Restaurant is a top destination for seafood and steak fans, with a friendly atmosphere and convenient locale along Highway 70 / Arendell Street. The restaurant utilizes a wealth of top ingredients for its staple creations, and is especially known for its Certified Angus Beef selections, which are sure to impress any meat lover.

The restaurant is overseen by executive chef Kris Dykeman, who moved to Emerald Isle in 2004, and perfected his style working at coastal restaurants throughout the region. Kris also has an extensive horticultural background, and uses it to his advantage by visiting and purchasing produce from local farms. The menu reflects this attention to fresh ingredients, with seasonal seafood dishes and year-round favorites, like shrimp and grits and SoundSide crab cakes, and decadent meaty entrees like maple bourbon pork chops and honey chickens. Patrons will also want to start with a fresh salad or appetizer, which includes coastal favorites like Oysters Rockefeller and Ahi tuna, and should save plenty of room for the seasonal desserts – which are all made in-house.

With little twists on standard favorites, and a nice selection of fresh steaks and seafood, SoundSide Restaurant is an excellent destination for a fine lunch or dinner that’s infused with Crystal Coast flavor.

Crystal Coast Vacation Rentals

Visitors who are heading to the Crystal Coast will find a scattering of hotels and motels throughout the shoreline and inland communities, but will soon discover that the primary type of accommodations available are vacation rentals. Located all along the Crystal Coast beaches from Atlantic Beach to the town of Emerald Isle, a vacation rental is the generally preferred accommodations option for vacationers thanks to ample space, exceptional locales close to the water, and plenty of homes and condos to choose from.

New Bern Firemans Museum

The New Bern Fire Department began as a fraternal organization and was originally called the "Atlantic Hook & Ladder Company," and was the first chartered fire department in the state of North Carolina. This original company became inactive during the Civil War when many of its volunteers were fighting for the Confederate Army, and noting a need for local firefighters, invading Union forces who had infiltrated and then settled in New Bern during the latter portion of the war, set up a rival company in 1865, the "New Bern Steam Fire Engine Company No. 1." The two companies remained in service well after the Civil War ended, but the initial rivalry between north and south originating companies never dissipated. Both companies would try to "out-do" each other with station equipment upgrades, and both companies regularly competed against each other in state-wide firefighting competitions. (Incidentally, both performed exceedingly well, perhaps due in no small part in an effort to out-do the other rival.)
